If you’ve ever been out of the country for a World Cup event, you have seen just how electric this time can be every four years. Very much like the Olympics – but without the curling and other boring sideshows – the World Cup puts most countries into a frenzy. If you’re a sports fan in any way, shape or form, this summer is going to be chock full of events vying for your attention. Try to keep your focus, get your work done and free up your time so you can check out the summer’s main events on satellite TV networks.
1. The MLB pennant races. Once the summer really kicks into full swing, it’s all about the MLB pennant races for sports fans. You can expect the AL East to deliver in a big way this summer, with Boston fighting to keep up with the Yankees and the reborn Rays. All three teams sport deep rotations from 1-5, with the Yankees getting the edge in offense, the Rays in speed and athleticism. At the other end of the spectrum, the NL West appears to be another terrific race to follow. You have the Giants struggling to score runs and catch the Dodgers (struggling to prevent runs from being scored on them). Meanwhile the Rockies and division-leading Padres are not going anywhere.
2. The World Cup. World Cup fever has been spreading for months and the games have begun in South Africa. Expect the host team to make a bid for immortality, much like the South Korean team of ’06. Italy looks to defend its last Cup, while Brazil is always in the running when the going gets tough. On top of these perennial contenders, a lot of attention will be headed the U.S. team’s way after its impressive showing in the championships of 2009. Check local listings to stay on top of the time difference with South Africa and see what all the fuss is about.
3. The NBA Finals. Kobe vs. the Big Three. Lakers vs. Celtics. A new dynasty to be anointed. If the Lakers can pull it out, they may have a team with several more championships left in them. If the Celtics can win the title once again, they will add to their already legendary status in the sports world. There is plenty of bad blood still boiling between these two teams from 2008. This NBA finals shouldn’t be missed by any sports fan, as history is going to be made in one way or another.
4. The World Championships of Basketball. Though not of the same magnitude as the up, the World Championships of Basketball are becoming increasingly popular all over the globe. Teams like Argentina and Spain have taken home the crown in recent years, much to the chagrin of the U.S. team. The 2008 Olympics set the record straight and put Gold Medals around the necks of Kobe, Lebron et al, but the fight is not over. See how the U.S. team follows up its dominant performance in the world championships.
